John Arkham is a character and antagonist who appears in Netflix's Devil May Cry.

Appearance

As a human, John Arkham appears as a tall, pale-skinned adult male with blond hair. He dresses in a white collared shirt, with a light brown and green accented button-up cardigan. When he transforms into a demon his skin turns white, his ears become pointed, he gets a long pointed nose, his teeth become sharp, and he loses most of his hair. Moments before and during his transformation, he wore an all-black outfit.

As Jester, his body gets more muscular. He wears a black outfit that blends the features of a traditional jester and that of a harlequin. His wears a fool's cap with two extensions; one red and one blue, whose tips are orange skulls. He wears a purple frill collar. His skin is white, has long nails, and has a long nose. He also carries a staff with a green jewel at the end.

Personality

Before he turned into a demon, John Arkham seemed to care for his family deeply. His entire research on demons was due to his disgust at his own weakness, stating "I need to find a way to give myself power, real power, so that I can protect this family." He was very intelligent, being a college professor, and able to make a serum that turned him into a demon. His research caused him to neglect his own family, shifting his focus from them onto gaining power, believing that his family's opinions on him didn't matter, so long as he could combat the darkness.

After his initial transition into a demon, he was relatively mindless, feasting on his own wife without remorse and being afraid of fire, reacting wildly to it. After the transformation "stabilized," he became more joking and careless, becoming a Jester for Mundus' court. He openly talked about Uroboros to Vergil, which counted as treason, highlighting his carefree mood. In his partial/suppressed form that he contacted Arius with, he was seemingly more timid. He has no remorse over his actions and mocked his daughter, Lady for her mother's death.

History

John was originally a college professor researching alternate worlds. He was married to Kalina Ann and was the father of Mary Ann Arkham. One day, after seeing a movie, John and his family were attacked by a demon. While John was frozen in shock, Kalina moved to protect Mary. Luckily, the demon was killed by a passing train before it could hurt any of them. The family tried to report the incident to the police, but they were laughed out of the station.

As time went on, John was unable to forget the incident, both because it proved the validity of his research but also lamenting on how weak he was. He began obsessing over demons, abandoning his job and locking himself in his study. This distanced him from his wife and daughter. As John's obsession grew, his health began to deteriorate, becoming skinnier and losing his hair. Eventually, John managed to obtain a demon's arm, and began experimenting. Eventually, his wife tried to reason with him, but John was already too far gone. The two fought until Mary entered the room. As Kalina tried to comfort her, Arkham seized the opportunity to inject himself with the demon's blood, ultimately transforming into a demon himself. He attacked Kalina, killing her, and eating her corpse right in front of Mary. Mary tried to fight him, but was quickly overpowered, though the struggle led to the building being set on fire. As Mary fled the building, John seemingly died in the flames.[1]

Biography

However, it was revealed that John did survive the fire, as some time after, he soon came to Arius to work for him. He then transformed into a Jester form, and began his work as a spy for Uroboros, leaking intel about the underworld as a high ranker in Mundus' army.
