Beowulf is a set of flash gauntlets and greaves Devil Arm appearing in Devil May Cry 3 which originates from Beowulf. It is wielded by both Vergil and Dante during the course of the game. Dante can acquire the weapon in Mission 14, while Vergil starts the game with this Devil Arm in his mode of Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition, Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, and Devil May Cry 5 and Special Edition.
Appearance and Description[]
Vergil Acquires Beowulf
Vergil acquires Beowulf, after defeating him.
Beowulf is a set of black gauntlets and greaves with a somewhat animalistic look. The gauntlets vaguely resemble a wolf's head, with fangs and mane. The greaves look like clawed legs. They also have glowing veins that have white light flowing through them.
As they are "blessed with the sacred light,"[1] all of Beowulf emits light with each punch and kick. They are capable of concentrating light into a ball and throwing it or erupting it from the user's body. It can also cover the user in light.

Beowulf
Beowulf, a mighty demon, thought once to take his hatred of Sparda out on the dark knight's son. Vergil, however, defeated him so completely, that there was nothing left but these boots and gauntlets.
Imbued with the power of light, they shine in close-quarters combat where a single, fully-charged attack can unleash immeasurable power.[2]

Beowulf
Fighting gauntlets and boots imbued with the power of light. They pack a hell of a wallop when fighting in close quarters.
So Vergil thrashed the mighty demon Beowulf so bad, hardly anything was left of him. Still managed to make these gauntlets and boots from the scraps!
I guess Beowulf had some kind of horrible grudge against the great swordsman Sparda and thought to take it out on his bloodline? Didn't go to well for him though! Dante claims to have fought this guy too. I asked about it but all he'd given me was "Stubborn bastard. Tougher than some, though."

Gameplay[]
Devil May Cry 3[]
Dante[]
Beowulf focuses on close-range, but powerful hits. Beowulf generally has a narrow area of effect making it less than ideal for crowd control. It boosts the wielder's attack and speed for close combat[4][5], and is able to charge its attacks for harder hits, and in the case of Rising Dragon, more hits. When Beowulf's attack becomes fully charged, the attacking body part will start to shake and Dante's voice will change in a rough outcry when the attack is performed.
Killer Bee is a dive-kick that can adjust its angle of descent to adjust for enemy position, and is very good when Jump Cancelling. Swordmaster technique Volcano will knock back all enemies around Dante, solving it's crowd control problem. The Hammer is an attack that, what it lacks with in terms of range, makes up for it's power, being one of the strongest mid-air attacks in the game - it's very good when used with the same technique as Killer Bee, truly shining against Hell Vanguards, capable of taking out a chunk of their health as they're weak to sources of Light.
Real Impact, one of the strongest moves of all the Devil Arms, will pull any enemies in Dante's immediate vicinity into the air with him, but has a long start-up and cannot be canceled out of, leaving Dante vulnerable - however, these vulnerability frames can be cut to a few, with any attack such as a Straight, after missing. Despite this attack launching him into the air, it is possible for all of the 3 hits of Real Impact to connect to fully grounded enemies such as Hell Greeds.
Vergil[]
In the Special Edition, Vergil has access to Beowulf and it generally has the same properties it has when used by Dante but lacks the charge mechanic. His attacks hit harder than Dante's, making up for the lack of a charging mechanic.
Starfall is Vergil's dive-kick, and it works the same as Dante's except it does more damage and travels much faster. Lunar Phase is a multi-hit spin kick that can be Jump Canceled. Rising Sun is Vergil's launcher where he performs two upward roundhouse kicks. This technique cannot be canceled and aerial attacks can't be used until the attack is finished.
Even though the cutscene involving Vergil obtaining the Devil Arm has him doing an uppercut similar to Real Impact before splitting the corpse of Beowulf in half with a Lunar Phase kick, this version of Real Impact cannot be used until the next game, which appears in the form of Beast Uppercut.
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition[]
Beowulf in general is Vergil's most powerful weapon as it can easily can be considered "overpowered". Vergil now gains access to its charging mechanic, and is able to charge all of its attacks up to two shines, or three with near-max Concentration. The Just Frame release can enhance every charge for higher damage, while a 3rd-tier charge at high-enough Concentration counts as an enhanced Just Frame version of a 2nd-tier charge. Just Frame charges and 3rd-tier charges can be combined with a properly-timed Distortion for devastating amounts of damage.
Note that while Beowulf's chargeable moves/inputs can normally be held indefinitely, any 3rd tier charges will instantly drop the charges and have any of them execute right after.
Beowulf gains a brand new Combo B (with the original Beowulf Combo being reallocated and renamed as Combo A), where Vergil performs a series of rapid kicks similar to Dante's DMC3 Beowulf Combo II and DMC4 Gilgamesh Combo B. However, instead of an axe kick finisher, the finishing input is instead a backslide-into-forward punch exactly like Dante's Draw-to-Straight with again, the Gilgamesh.
Rising Sun's input is now replaced with Vergil's own version of Beast Uppercut, which can be charged to become Rising Dragon with one charge level, or Dragon Breaker with a second one and beyond. Rising Dragon has Vergil rise into the air while spinning during his uppercut with extra hits, while two or three charges makes him rise up with one small jumping uppercut followed by a higher one (which is Dragon Breaker).
Starfall's kicking portion (before landing impact) however, now knocks its victims away on airborne hit instead of hitting them in place (just like the landing impact hitbox), making jump cancel/enemy step cancel combos off of this more specific and less free-form than before.
Vergil also gains Dante's version of the Kick 13 with the Gilgamesh (via a 4 spin-kick barrage followed into a finishing kick-up). However, Devil Trigger does not change the animation of Vergil's Kick 13 unlike with Dante's.
In Devil Trigger, Vergil is able to spend some of his Devil Trigger gauge to power up his moves, much like Dante, where only Lunar Phase is enhanched. Rising Sun is an automatic followup to the grounded version, while the midair version exclusively gains extra spins.
There is also an "infinite spin abuse" trick, which can render any enemy stun-locked, even Dante, who is able to quickly evade attacks. The formula of it is simple: {Teleport to an enemy + use Lunar Phase + teleport to an enemy again before attack finishes (this allows you to cancel it) + use Lunar Phase again....} and then repeat.
Visually, a number of Beowulf's swiping motion attacks now have light claw marks left behind as the attacking trails, as opposed to just merely having the fists and legs of the user glow as they attack.
However, Beowulf's charge times tend to be very long for each possible move that can be charged, which especially leaves Vergil as a sitting duck. Tactics can range from having an enemy staggered naturally (depending on the enemy in question of course), pinning the intended victim down mid-charge (or just before starting one) with Heavy Rain Swords, bracing Vergil with Spiral Swords, and the like. While activating DT to try and super-armor through incoming attacks can also work in maintaining a charge, do be aware it might tank Vergil's current Concentration level depending on the incoming attack he choose to tank-through in question.
Devil May Cry 5 and Special Edition[]
Beowulf returns as Vergil's power-based weapon. It retains all of its moves from Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, along with the return of Rising Sun outside of Devil Trigger Lunar Phase as a followup to Kick 13 (almost akin to Dante's DT Gilgamesh Kick 13); Kick 13 itself also gains a new input as well. All chargeable attacks are also now able to be held down indefinitely, as opposed to instantly releasing at the 3rd charge when at Concentration Level 2.
Starfall once more via its kicking portion no longer knocks its victims away on airborne hit (just like in DMC3SE), and only via its landing impact that it does.
In Sin Devil Trigger, Beowulf gains further additions to its moveset unlike with Vergil's prior Devil Trigger:
- Vergil adds in an extra backspin roundhouse kick finisher during Combo A.
- Combo B adds in an extra explosive-force shoulder lean finisher after the Straight-esque punch.
- Lunar Phase gains more spins on both grounded and midair versions.
- A forward-jumping dragon kick-styled move upon landing during Starfall, which can only trigger on hit and not on whiff.
- Kick 13 gains 2 extra kicks (which includes an inward spin kick and backspin heel drop) before its finishing kick-up.
- Vergil instead performs three spinning-jump uppercuts during Dragon Breaker, charged at either level 2 or 3. Rising Dragon becomes unchanged however.
Vergil also gains a new super attack tied to SDT called Hell on Earth, an attack similar to Sin Inferno where he raises his hand while charging up power before slamming it down in a wide explosion. Though it deals an incredible amount of damage at the center, it rapidly falls off the further away the enemy is from Vergil, making it ideal for boss fights or closed rooms. It is thus Vergil's most damaging super attack of the 3 he has so far, but like Judgment Cut End Vergil will lose Concentration levels if he's hit during its startup, even during SDT's super armor.
Again, Beowulf is plagued by long charge times on any of its charge-able inputs. The strategies apply as with 4SE.

Other Appearances[]
Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds[]
Dante uses the Beowulf in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. The skills packed with it are Killer Bee, The Hammer, and Volcano, along with a new ability called Beehive (which is actually a named version of his Beowulf Combo II from the original DMC3), where Dante kicks rapidly with his greaves then heel smashes the ground, acting as a followup input to Volcano. Meanwhile, The Hammer acts as a followup input to Killer Bee.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3[]
The updated re-release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 features the addition of Vergil to the roster of playable characters. He comes equipped with Beowulf, like Dante, and can use several of its attacks. Starfall is used as his j.S air combo/aerial rave finisher, while Lunar Phase and Rising Sun are used as special moves.
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite[]
Dante retains the use of Beowulf in Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite with many of the same moves as before, though the gauntlets now exude a purple glow when used. However, Volcano has an alternate variant which is used as a followup input to Stinger-to-Million Stabs (but cannot go into Beehive from this sequence), while The Hammer becomes a standalone special.
Trivia[]
- In the Devil May Cry 3 Trial Ver. game files, this weapon is called Zodiac (ゾディアック Zodiakku?), it's unknown if this was supposed to be the demon's name.
- "Zodiac" is also the name of one of the Swordmaster attacks with Beowulf in final version of Devil May Cry 3.
- In Devil May Cry 3, Vergil second boss fight has a unique animation where he slams Beowulf into the ground, surrounding him in a flash of white rings similar to Dante when he triggers a Crazy Combo. This animation signifies the next phase of the battle where-in Vergil will start using Yamato.
- This animation bears a strong resemblance to one of Dante's weapon swap animations from Devil May Cry, befitting Vergil's transition to Yamato.
- Vergil's line "Rest in peace" is brought back for Hell on Earth in Devil May Cry 5, which coincidentally bears a resemblance to the Volcano-like attack. However, the Japanese equivalent of the line carried over from Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is altered a bit (from "Yasuraka ni nemuru ga ii" to "Yasuraka ni nemure").
- His iconic "Now I'm motivated" line is also carried over as well, with the Japanese version from UMvC3 also being altered likewise (from "Sukoshi dake, honki wo dashite yarou"/"Just for a little, I'll let loose seriously" to "Sukoshi honki wo dashite kure"/"I'll let loose seriously for a little").
- Vergil's Dragon Breaker resembles the Shouryuu Reppa and Messatsu Gou Shouryuu techniques from the Street Fighter series, albeit with its SDT enhanced variant in 5: Special Edition resembling their stronger triple variants.
- Likewise, his Beowulf Combo B finisher under SDT also resembles a recurring fictional Bajiquan technique by the name of Tieshankao/Tetsuzankou.
- For his reboot counterpart, while both Vergils have the same diving kick attack in their movesets in Japanese, their English names are different from one another (Starfall vs. Killer Bee).
