Bathos and Pathos are flying enemies in DmC: Devil May Cry. To make up for their small vitality, they sometimes carry a shield that must be removed first in order for them to be damaged.

Description

Bathos

Bathos are golden, putto-like demons that constantly hover in the air. Their abdomen is an open cavity filled with fire, which they shoot explosive charges from. They can optionally spawn holding an additional shield on higher difficulties.

Pathos

Pathos are similar to Bathos but have ivory bodies and green wings. They specialize in long-range attacks from the air using a crossbow that shoots balls of fire. Like the Bathos, they can also carry a small shield that deflects attacks, which will need to be torn from their arm before Dante can deal damage.

Reason: need to condense duplicate info

Bathos and Pathos behave mostly the same in how they move around and attack the player, with the only differences being the projectiles that they fire, and the actions that they do to telegraph their next attack.

Bathos

Bathos' bombs can be deflected back at them, making short work of them, otherwise, the bombs will land on the ground and explode after a few seconds. The ensuing blast not only damages the player, but can also potentially damage other demons, should they also be caught in the blast. Bathos will telegraph its first bomb throw by screeching, and depending on the difficulty, will throw a few additional bombs without any audio or visual warning.

Learning the timing for this can make parrying this projectile much easier. The bombs can also be auto-parried with Osiris' Prop and Shredder attacks.

On higher difficulties, Bathos will often carry shields, which can be instantly pulled off by using Demon Pull, or destroyed by dealing enough damage to it by using any attack.

Pathos

Pathos' crossbow bolts can be parried back at them, however doing so doesn't deal very much damage. Before firing their crossbow bolts, Pathos will telegraph its first crossbow bolt by screeching once and flashing a beam of light at the player four times before firing the first bolt, and depending on the difficulty, will fire a few additional bolts without any audio or visual warning.

Etymology

"Pathos" means compassion, sympathy, or pity, while "Bathos" means something ordinary in what is supposed to be extraordinary, an anticlimax often used for comedic effect. It also means "insincere pathos", which befits it's image as a more demonic version of the angelic Pathos.
